Show benefits to involve people.

Talk by Narayan.G.Hegde.

Talk by Narayan.G.Hegde.

Yesterday the guest speaker was Narayan .G. Hegde who is the director of BIAF organisation. His Talk was on ‘Global Warming’. He shared his experience in afforestation projects involving people. To involve people we have to show them the benefits. The slogans like “Plant a tree to save earth” is less appealing to rural people. Instead  if the Slogan is ” Plant a tree and earn 1000 Rs. a year” will be more appealing to rural people. Only if there is vested interest, people will participate.

Talk by Girish on 'Wildlife Conservation'

Talk by Girish on 'Wildlife conservation'.

5th September was an important day for me. My mentor Girish D.V a noted Wildlife Conservationist   was the Guest speaker. Early morning I went to the lodge to meet him. After a brief talk about Fellowship, I explained him my plan to setup an ecotourism Center in Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, use it as a tool for providing livelihood for local people and involve them in Conservation. Girish thought for a while and mentioned four important points. Firstly the local people should take the ownership of the ecotourism centre and involve in the activities like it is happening in Some African countries. Secondly Professionalism should be maintained, like a tourist should be facilitated to identify at least 100 birds and realize the importance of conserving wildlife and habitats. Thirdly trust should be build in the tourists through quality, so that they visit again and recommend others to visit our center and fourthly to achieve this, a good team is essential which is trained and paid well. These words eco in my ears and remind me that there is a lot to learn and do.

People participation and ownership.

Farmers Field School

Farmers Field School

In last two months of fellowship program we have visited many NGOs and I was most influenced by the Farmers Field School coordinated by AME Foundation and Farmers Resource Centre “Gram Chetana” coordinated by BIAF. The important learning from this exposure visit is the significance of People participation in Planning and their ownership for any development activity to succeed and sustain. Here the development programs are planned and executed according to the opinion and needs of the people. This bottom to top approach is the key to success, something that is missing in the development programs implemented by the government departments. In the government departments the planning and decisions happen at bureaucracy levels with less or no participation of people. This top down approach leads to a situation where people participate in government programs, but for the development program to succeed government should participate in people’s program.
